Lavrov, speaking at a news conference with his Turkish counterpart, said over time the role of the US dollar as the currency of global trade will decline.
The Russian foreign minister is on a working trip to Turkey, during which he will hold a bilateral meeting in Ankara on Tuesday with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu to discuss burning worldwide issues.
Russia backs using national currencies, not the U.S. dollar, in its trade with Turkey, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday, but he made no firm commitments that would immediately help Ankara to weather its currency crisis. "'Should we resolve this problem with Turkey or should we maintain it until November elections?'" Hurriyet cited Cavusoglu as saying.
On Monday Erdogan, angered by what he sees as Washington's attempts to unilaterally impose its rules on global finance, said Turkey had "made advancements in our ties with Russian Federation in accordance to our benefits and interests".
He did not though make any commitments for Russian Federation to drop the dollar in trade with Turkey, whose lira currency has plummeted.
"I have already spoken about the sanctions: they are illegal, undermine all principles of global trade and principles approved by United Nations decisions, under which unilateral measures of economic duress are unlawful", Lavrov said.
The Russian minister explained that his country and Turkey are discussing the full implementation of the de-escalation agreements in Syria, including in Idlib. Cavusoglu said on Tuesday that he hoped to find a solution over Idlib during a meeting with Lavrov.
Ankara is locked in a complex rift with Washington that has seen the two countries impose tariffs on some of each other's imports and has exacerbated a currency crisis in Turkey.
"We need to determine these terrorist (groups) and eliminate them with intelligence and military forces", he said in Ankara ahead of talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, whose country has backed Assad militarily. "Not only with Turkey and Iran, we're also arranging and already implementing payments in national currencies with the People's Republic of China", Lavrov said. They threaten the civilian population. "Within the framework of the Astana process, we have taken measures aimed at building more confidence between the Idlib opposition and the government".
