Foulke said three people were injured in the shooting, though the City Administrator Mike Davis said earlier that the number of injured was four.
"Officers and emergency personnel are on the scene", Middleton Police said in a statement. The man fired at officers before he was shot, and he later died at a Madison hospital. The husband of a woman who works in the building said she told him about hearing "sounds like hammers hitting something, but it was gunshots".
Judy Lahmers, a business analyst at WTS Paradigm, said she was working at her desk when she heard shots at about 10am.
Middleton Police Chief Charles Foulke said that the building, where the shooting took place, was cleared and secured. We're all software people. "We have a good group". Esker employee Gabe Geib says he heard a couple of shots but didn't immediately know what it was. He said, "I saw a dude walking with a gun inside the building". Others remained huddled in a cafeteria for more than an hour. "The bad news is that there were four injured by the suspect".
Middleton Police spokesperson Keith Cleasby said that the suspect was rushed to a local hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.
Three yellow school buses full of more than 100 people, including witnesses, were unloaded at a hotel about 5 miles (8 kilometers) from the office building.
The suspected gunman who opened fire in a Middleton, Wisconsin, building on Wednesday was fatally shot by police, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Middleton is a suburb of Madison with about 17,000 residents.
Arthur also said an ambulance was leaving the scene.
Authorities are now in the process of clearing the building and the surrounding area.
The Greenway Station shopping center next door to the office building is on lockdown.
