The 42-year-old tech tycoon made headlines Tuesday when SpaceX revealed that Maezawa has chartered a flight aboard the company's Big Falcon Rocket, which is still being developed, for a slingshot trip around the moon as soon as 2023.
Musk said the BFR is still in development and will make several unmanned test launches before it takes on passengers. He wants his guests "to see the moon up close, and the Earth in full view, and create work to reflect their experience", he says.
The trip to the Moon is expected to last a week and would carry the first non-American human beyond the Earth's orbit.
The identity of the traveler will be revealed at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California, during an event Monday evening.
Last year, Maezawa dropped $110.5 million on a Jean-Michel Basquiat painting, the highest ever price paid at auction for a work by an American artist.
Forbes estimates Maezawa is worth $2.9 billion, so he's got deep pockets to bankroll his art addiction and space ambitions.
"This has done a lot to restore my faith in humanity - that somebody's willing to do this", Musk said.
A Vancouver artist thinks his skills make him an excellent candidate to go on a space ship to the moon.
Musk says he's aiming for Maezawa's moonshot to take place in 2023.
The lawsuit brought by Vernon Unsworth, who helped with the rescue of 12 Thai teenagers from a flooded cave in July, seeks $75,000 in compensation and an injunction against Mr Musk to stop further allegations.
On plans to send "space tourists" to the moon SpaceX said in early 2017. "I don't know if they have the skills to translate that experience in a way that is digestible for the majority of people".
Interestingly, we're about to enter a roughly 10-month period that will mark the 50-year anniversary of not just the lunar landing, but a series of five Apollo launches in quick succession that led to the most famous, Apollo 13.
Boeing Co. and SpaceX have contracts with NASA to fly the agency's astronauts to the International Space Station as part of what's known as the Commercial Crew Program. The original plan called for two paying passengers to fly around the moon this year, using a Falcon Heavy rocket and a Dragon crew capsule.
Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin and Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic are also battling it out to launch private-sector spacecraft, but neither have so far announced pkans as ambitious as SpaceX.
Musk's successes have recently been overshadowed by his behavior and the struggles of his Tesla electric vehicle company to deliver.
