Tran Dai Quang, who had earlier served as Vietnamese Minister of Public Security, became president in 2016, replacing Truong Tan Sang, aged 67, who had served as the head of state since 2011.

Quang hosted US President Donald Trump during his first state visit to the communist country a year ago. Although the president sits on the powerful decision-making politburo but his role is far more ceremonial.
In an interview with AFP in 2016 ahead of a visit by the former French leader Francois Hollande, Quang read from a prepared statement and was quickly escorted from the room by staff when a question went off-script.
Vietnam has no paramount ruler and is officially led by the president, prime minister and Communist Party chief.
His tenure has also been marked by the escalation of the conflict with china regarding the territorial sovereignty over the south China sea.
Some 97 activists had been jailed as of April this year, according to Amnesty International.
