Earlier this year, Oculus announced the Oculus Go, a $199 standalone headset meant to drive VR experiences to people without the need for wires or smartphones. There is also a Star Wars game on the way that focusses entirely on Darth Vader. And for those that are anxious they could potentially bump into their furniture while playing, the Oculus Quest will also support Guardian, which will allow users to set up virtual barriers.
"With Oculus Quest, we will finish our first generation of Oculus products", said Zuckerberg. The supplied controllers look a lot like the Rift's controllers and have the same button layout - but with the loop positions above, rather than below your hands. As such, Oculus Go owners will be interested to learn that YouTube VR will be coming to the headset, providing Oculus Go users will access to over 800 VR videos covering a wide variety of subjects.
The Quest will also have 50 titles of fully developed apps (read here: Games) ready at launch. The bundle launches in Spring 2019 for the price of USD399. While Oculus Go simply measures head movements and Rift made use of three Oculus Camera trackers to map a room-size space, Quest can assess a room and make a playable area with nothing but its built-in sensors.
Thanks to this year's Oculus Connect 5 keynote, we now know that Project Santa Cruz has been given an official designation: Oculus Quest. The fine print at the bottom of the press release states that "Oculus Quest has not been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission".
The Oculus Quest seems to be the evolution of the Go, with the same basic concept of not being tethered to a PC, and not relying on any external devices.
