"That's so good. Thank you Nikki", Mr. Trump said in response.
"At the end of the year, Nikki will be leaving", the president said, according to pool reporters in the room.
"I expect to continue to speak out from time to time on important public policy matters, but I will surely not be a candidate for any office in 2020", she wrote. Mr Trump said Ms Haley told him "probably six months ago" that she may be leaving, that is around the same time that Mr Bolton got the job last April. Haley made sure to name-check Trump family members and White House aides Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, praising them for their work in the administration.
The resignation, first reported by Axios, sent shockwaves across Washington. Congressional Republicans involved in foreign policy matters and some key U.S. allies did not get advance word from Haley or the White House.
The six-month timeline also coincides with a high-profile spat between Haley and the White House in April, when she drew the president's ire for previewing in a television appearance the administration's planned imposition of a new round of sanctions on Russian Federation.
U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley plans to resign, The Associated Press has learned. A United Nations source told The National that Ms Haley has been getting increasingly frustrated with US National Security Adviser John Bolton who was a former United Nations ambassador.
Haley, who has been one of Trump's most trusted advisers, would not confirm the report to Reuters when asked about it during a visit to the White House on Tuesday.
The daughter of immigrants from India, Mrs Haley was a frequent and early critic of Mr Trump during his election campaign whilst she served as the Republican governor of SC. But she also hinted at her disagreements with the President, saying she had a "personal conversation" with Trump about his response to white supremacist violence in Charlottesville, Virginia past year. "As a private citizen, I look forward to supporting your re-election as President, and supporting the policies that will continue to move our country toward even greater heights".
"I, too, am a senior Trump administration official", Haley wrote in her op-ed.
In April, she clashed with the White House when a Trump aide suggested she had prematurely announced a new round of sanctions against Russian Federation.
A former governor of SC who is the daughter of Indian immigrants, Haley is seen as a rising star in the Republican Party and a possible candidate for the 2020 presidential elections. She was re-elected in 2014.
Echoing previous statements from Trump, Haley said the United States under his presidency is now respected around the world.
As governor, she developed a national reputation as a racial conciliator who led the charge to bring down the Confederate flag at the Statehouse and guided SC through one of its darkest moments, the massacre at a black church.
