Martin Truex Jr. will be starting at the back of the field for Sunday's race at Texas Motor Speedway, NASCAR announced Saturday.
Harvick rocketed past polesitter Ryan Blaney in overtime Sunday, after the third restart in the final 35 laps, to win the Texas fall race for the second year in a row and take one of the four championship-contending spots for the season finale in two weeks.
With the win, Harvick joined Joey Logano in having clinched spots into the Championship 4. The drivers head to Phoenix this weekend.
"We have two important races here where I am in a position to run for a championship", Truex said.
In a race that produced a last-lap pass for the win, a record 13 cautions and an unmitigated disaster for favorite son Christopher Bell, Cole Custer moved past Tyler Reddick on the backstretch to win.
While trying to get one of those spots, Truex is going into the final three races with the Furniture Row team since the primary sponsor is leaving the one-car operation based in suburban Denver.
Other Notables: #2 Brad Keselowski P12, #88 Alex Bowman P14, #48 Jimmie Johnson P15, #24 William Byron P16, #18 Kyle Busch P17, #14 Clint Bowyer P26, #11 Denny Hamlin P30. He has 19 top fives to go with his 20 top 10s.
His 25-point lead is over Kurt Busch and he trails Kyle Busch by only three points for the third-place positon.
"Had to start at the back, got to the front, hung around there for a while and then had a loose wheel there again", Truex explained.
The conditions in Texas led to a race that was more about strategy and position than pure speed or driver ability, a fact that frustrated some of the drivers.
"When that type of stuff happens, you see scenarios like that, you have to be real with yourself to say that these are scenarios that you better enjoy because they probably won't last forever".
"It was one of those things, again, a human error that we've really got to look at and look at some additional procedures we can have in place prior to Phoenix", O'Donnell said Monday on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. "If we don't make that call, I think (media) would be asking why we didn't". Now Almirola is upset with Logano after one of the late restarts in Texas.
"If that is the way he wants to race me when he is already locked into Homestead and we are out here fighting for our lives, that is fine", Almirola said. "It's inevitable, and it's not a ideal scenario, it's not what we all wanted, but I think everybody on the team has done an unbelievable job of focusing in on the right things and continue to perform at a high level". "When Homestead comes around if I am not in, he will know it".
Truex Jr.is the driver who Almirola trails by 57 points, and Almirola has no way of passing his point total in the Can-Am 500 without winning the race. He had qualified 23rd for his 600th start with Chad Knaus as his crew chief.
"That's how you control your destiny the most is to get in Victory Lane", Harvick said.
NASCAR admitted the error during Sunday's race but it was too late to remedy.
The only stress for Harvick was lane choice for the overtime.
