Lee was known for his "flawed" superheroes; protagonists who showed a more human side to their characters.
The Marvel legend, who was recently at the center of a legal battle over alleged financial and physical elder abuse, died Monday after being rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center from his Hollywood Hills home.
Stan Lee is survived by his daughter J. C. Lee, and we wish her and the rest of Lee's extended family and friends our deepest sympathies.

As the top writer at Marvel Comics and later as its publisher, he revived the industry in the 1960s by offering the costumes and action craved by younger readers while insisting on sophisticated plots, college-level dialogue, satire, science fiction, even philosophy.
The parallel rise, competition, and exploitation of the comic book format that propelled DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, and other smaller publishing houses throughout the 20th century is not entirely down to Lee, but his arms-out embrace of the fans of that subculture also, perhaps, generated what we recognize as fan culture today. He has made a cameo in every Marvel movie to date, and reportedly filmed a bunch more cameos for future movies (including Captain Marvel and Avengers 4) before his death.
