A news conference was scheduled for Tuesday during which Meyer is to announce his retirement, with co-offensive coordinator Ryan Day appointed the team's 25th head coach. Upon Meyer's return, the team continued winning but was hampered by defensive issues all season. When asked about it at last week's Big Ten Championship Game, he dropped a "No comment". Through the Big Ten championship game Young led the Buckeyes in sacks with 9.5, as well as tackles for loss with 14.5. He's reportedly been offered multiple head coaching jobs, but turned them down to stay at Ohio State. He spent one year as a college football analyst for ESPN before taking the Ohio State job citing improved health and life decisions.
Ohio State could have spent much of the season watching other coaches, but in each of those instances, the university would have had to imagine those coaches at OSU.
"Marotti is considered one of the top-five strength coaches in the country, Voltolini has helped Meyer build programs since his early days at Bowling Green, and Pantoni is the most respected personnel director in college football", Thamel wrote. When Kelly was the Philadelphia Eagles' head coach in 2015, he picked Day as his quarterbacks coach. Those are high expectations for Day to follow, but not necessarily unrealistic. "Coach Day is awesome".
Then a year later he headed to Ohio State. "He is known for getting his guys on the right track, he's always sharp with his reads, he understands the game so well and he's so passionate about it". Ohio State will officially name Day as the permanent replacement on Tuesday. First, other programs began to lap at his heels, then the defense fell apart, allowing 49 or more in three of the final six road games of Meyer's tenure - 54 to Iowa past year, 49 to Purdue, and 51 to Maryland - at the same time that off field issues surrounding Zach Smith surged to the forefront.
Meyer might be retiring so he can distance himself from one of the recent big scandals in college football.
Meyer played collegiately at Cincinnati, spent two years as an unpaid graduate assistant at Ohio State, and worked 13 seasons as a salaried assistant at Illinois State, Colorado State, and Notre Dame.
