Jermaine Massey was in the hotel lobby when a security guard informed him that police were on their way to escort him off the property.
Two employees at the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in Portland were accused of racially profiling Jermaine Massey on December 22, when Massey posted a video to Instagram showing the incident as it unfolded. Since then, the security guard and hotel manager who were involved in the incident were fired after the general manager took a look at the footage.
'We sincerely apologize to Mr. Massey for his treatment this past weekend, and deeply regret the experience he endured, ' the follow-up statement read. They said the men's actions "were inconsistent with our standards & values". Our hotel is committed to engaging outside advisors and experts in diversity and inclusion to evaluate our processes, protocols and trainings to ensure something like this does not happen again.
It's the latest high-profile incident in which black people have been removed from businesses.
These incidents, often documented by smartphone videos, have given examples of racial profiling a broad audience. Massey took a seat in a secluded part of the hotel lobby for privacy to talk with her.
Massey said through his attorneys Thursday that he wasn't interested in a closed-door discussion.
Sgt. Chris Burley, a spokesman for the Portland Police Bureau, said in a statement Friday that the hotel had the authority to ask Massey to leave and that the police officer had offered to help him get to a new hotel, which Massey declined.
"To escort you off the property".
"Because what? And I'm staying here?" Responding police officers told him to check out of the hotel as the dispute escalated.
Earl then informed him that he planned to call the cops since Massey failed to comply.
Meyers told police that there was a lot of foot traffic in the hotel stemming from the concert and that he saw a man sitting in the lobby on the phone, according to the police report. While he was on the phone, he recorded a security guard by the name of "Earl" come up to him and ask if he was staying in the hotel, according to The Oregonian.
Portland Commissioner-elect Jo Ann Hardesty issued a statement that criticized the Portland police, which Wheeler oversees. "Can you leave me alone right now?'" Massey recalls in the Instagram videos.
After gathering his belongings, the cops directed Massey to file a complaint with hotel management to avoid being arrested for trespassing, he recalled.
