In an interview with Fox News on Thursday, Officer Singh's boss, Stanislaus County sheriff, Adam Christianson, drove home the connection between Singh's murder and the issue at the forefront of a Congressional budget battle. Seven other people, including Arriaga's girlfriend and brother, face charges of accessory after the fact, or aiding and abetting. He was taken into custody along with his brother, 25-year-old Adrian Virgen and his co-worker 32-year-old Erik Razo Quiroz, for allegedly attempting to help him leave the country after the incident. Virgen was arrested in Hanford and Quiroz in Modesto, Christianson said.
The emotional statement was delivered moments before authorities announced that they'd nabbed Gustavo Perez Arriaga, 33, for allegedly killing Singh's brother, Newman Police Department Corporal Ronil Singh on December 26.
Arriaga is accused of shooting to death Newman police corporal Sonil Singh after Singh pulled him over on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Singh was a native of Fiji and joined the force in July 2011.
During a news conference on Friday, Christianson spoke out strongly against California's sanctuary laws.
"Officer Singh's handcuffs were brought down, and they're on that guy for his trip home", Youngblood said.
All three men arrested Friday are in the country illegally, according to Christianson.
Richardson said Singh was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting and riding his jet ski.
At the press conference, Christianson introduced Singh's tearful brother Reggie Singh, who expressed gratitude to law enforcement for dedicating themselves to finding his older brother's killer.
Christianson, who was at a meeting with Trump and slams California's law in a video posted by the White House in May, said the measure prohibited his department from sharing Perez Arriaga's gang ties, "other active warrants" and past DUI arrests with federal immigration authorities.
Christianson said Virgen and Quiroz were also in the USA illegally. "Time to get tough on Border Security". The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department shared images of the suspect from a convenience store, in the hopes that someone would recognize him.
The sheriff said Perez Arriaga has gang affiliations and multiple Facebook pages with different names. Jerry Brown says the law permits sharing information on unsafe gang members with federal authorities. Christianson also praised their partners in Kern County for apprehending Arriaga in Bakersfield.
Newman Police Chief Randy Richardson called Singh a patriot.
His wife, holding their 5-month-old baby stood with family while the community gathered in support. "He believed in this community", the chief said at a candlelight vigil that hundreds attended Friday night to honor Singh.
