You would think players who are not getting regular first team football would run through a brick wall when their chance finally arrives, but that was not the attitude of some Liverpool players on Monday night and it was worrying to see.
The Reds have lost two straight matches in two different competitions, starting with a narrow 2-1 defeat to Manchester City that reopened the Premier League title race.
"It's easier saying that but we have to do that at the weekend".
The "big chance" Carragher references cannot be underplayed, and with Manchester City likely to get to at least the next rounds of the Carabao and FA Cup, that would mean an extra four games for Pep Guardiola's team. Maybe a few smart people would have said I didn't respect the competition. I think we just didn't get going really, didn't get the passing going, just weren't quite at our level.
"This season we have the depth".
"Then after we got ourselves back into the game at 1-1 we were so slow to close Ruben Neves down and he hammered one into the bottom corner".
"Ki coming on after a minute and playing like he did [was] absolutely outstanding".
"It's not something you want, especially at Liverpool, we know what's expected. You can see that straight away - his temperament, he's comfortable on the ball".
Jurgen Klopp now looks likely to have to choose between playing Fabinho or Georginio Wijnaldum at the heart of the Liverpool defence against Brighton this weekend. "The games keep coming thick and fast and hopefully we can get a few of the injured lads back as well".
Jurgen Klopp's side now maintain a four-point lead over Man City, and an immediate response will be required to maintain that lead as the title race truly heats up.
