The Illinois Department of Agriculture rejected the request for a concert in Springfield citing protests held outside the singer's Chicago studio which erupted following the airing of a Lifetime documentary series called Surviving R. Kelly which alleges sexual misconduct involving underage girls.
Based on their account of how they were treated by the singer and other allegations made against him, it would seem that R. Kelly is not the person the world has revered as an icon for many decades. His own daughter later called him "a monster" on social media. Kelly as an alleged "sex dungeon" and living quarters for young girls in what they referred to as a sex cult, filed an eviction lawsuit against him in July for breaking his contract, which guaranteed a 10-year lease at a monthly rate of $22,927.41. "It is our job at the Cook County State Attorney's office to investigate claims in the interest of justice and public safety".
"He gets royalties from his songwriting", said Greenberg. But he said that was not necessary to determine that they lied, noting that none of them ever went to police or presented anyone with evidence of physical abuse.
The Clarys met R. Kelly when Azriel was aged 17. In 2008, the singer was tried and acquitted on child pornography charges in Chicago.
Greenberg noted the timing of documentary, after sexual misconduct allegations that have derailed the careers of several famous men.
Greenberg explained that he and Kelly "have not looked at all of the women" that appeared in the documentary, adding that "all that matters is that whatever any of them are saying did not happen".
Early Saturday morning (January 12) protesters and supporters of the movement gathered outside the singer's studio near the West Side of Chicago for the second time this week.
