Born in Chak Khedevala, Gill was keenly interested in cricket from a young age but due to the lack of facilities in their village, his family made a decision to move to Mohali in 2007. Both can hit a ball - pitched just outside the off-stump - through extra cover as well as the mid-wicket region. Possessing a lanky frame, Gill's solid technique and effortless hits to the fence quickly had everyone drawing comparisons right from Virat Kohli to Steve Smith.
Nineteen-year-old Shubman Gill has earned his maiden One-Day International (ODI) for India's upcoming New Zealand tour. Finally, he was going to realise his dream of sharing the dressing room with his "idol". He is my idol. I have learned how to handle pressure.
"He is a young guy whose batting I like to watch. Whatever I learn, I try and put it into practice in the nets", the youngster added.
With all said and done - from nowhere being on the radar of the selectors to being chosen in the Indian national squad - it will be interesting to see how Gill grabs the opportunity, with ICC World Cup 2019 looming over. "I am familiar with the conditions because I have just travelled there [with the India A squad]. If I can do that, it will serve me well", says Vijay.
"I am preparing myself to bat in the middle-order for India". I was excited and I gave the good news to my father and mother Kearat Gill, who were sleeping at that time. Furthermore, he has simply been outstanding in the ongoing Ranji Trophy, representing Punjab, where he has notched a mammoth 728 runs in five matches at a enormous average of 104 and a jaw-dropping strike-rate of 78.61. "I am looking forward to a great experience and learning a lot". The confidence of having scored runs on a consistent basis is there.
There is an air of positivity and expectancy around Punjab Cricket's selection, the general perception being that he could be the fulcrum of Indian batting in future along with the likes of Prithvi Shaw and Rishab Pant.
"Obviously, I am feeling very happy and very special about the call-up".
Talking to Sportskeeda in an exclusive chat about his call-up, Shubman said, "I was about to sleep at night and I suddenly got a storm of messages on WhatsApp from my friends and reporters. For the first 15-20 seconds, I was in a state of shock", while speaking to India TV News. "I went and told my dad and he was very happy". "Initially, I thought this was more of a speculation type of news; but then when I got the call from BCCI, I was over the moon".
A year ago, Gill was preparing for the U-19 World Cup in New Zealand, a tournament which saw the Punjab youngster amassing 372 runs in six matches, including a century against Pakistan in the semi-finals. Gill was thankful to Rahul Dravid for the evolution in his game.
"Rahul sir told me one thing - that he has faith in my ability to finish games".
