Pound steady as Tories face no-confidence vote

"Before there can be any positive discussions about the way forward, the government must remove clearly, once and for all, the prospect of the catastrophe of a no-deal Brexit from the European Union and all the chaos that would come as a result of that", he said. We can lobby for our preferred outcome - for readers of this newspaper, surely no-Brexit - but should also just try to get them to face reality and avert disaster.

"The government confirmed that she would not take 'no-deal'off the table", Corbyn said in a speech in the English town of Hastings, scene of a battle in 1066 that ushered in the Norman conquest of England.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn opened Wednesday's debate by telling May she was leading a "zombie government" whose Brexit agreement was "officially dead". May said an election "would deepen division when we need unity, it would bring chaos when we need certainty, and it would bring delay when we need to move forward".

None of the Conservatives who met with the prime minister wanted to comment publicly.

He said senior ministers would meet colleagues from across the House of Commons, Britain's lower house of parliament, on Thursday.

"After two-and-a-half years, Plan B is to let parliament take over", the Telegraph said.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said there was time for talks as long as London could present a clear and united position.

The opposition leader had earlier told an audience in East Sussex that the Prime Minister had made no "serious attempt to engage with the new reality that is needed" to get a Withdrawal Agreement through Parliament.

"Good luck to the representatives of the nation who have to implement something that doesn't exist", Macron said.

"We can regret this rejection or rejoice in it, but in any case what is certain is that the scenario of a no-deal Brexit is less and less unlikely", Philippe told reporters. Business groups have expressed alarm at the prospect of a no-deal exit.

It means he remains the only Westminster party leader to be left out talks aimed at finding a way to sort out the Brexit mess, (except the leader of Sinn Fein whose party does not take up their seats in Parliament).

The pound was trading broadly flat versus the U.S. dollar and euro at 1.285 and 1.127 respectively, as MPs once again prepare to cast their ballot.

The three automakers export finished vehicles to the European Union, where they procure auto parts for supply to their United Kingdom plants.

"Yesterday's unprecedented vote makes the prospect of leaving the European Union without a deal even more likely", said Venki Ramakrishnan, president of the Royal Society in London, in a statement.

The most contentious section was an insurance policy known as the "backstop" created to prevent the reintroduction of border controls between the U.K.'s Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, an European Union member state.

Corbyn said May had sent Britain hurtling towards the cliff edge of a sudden exit on March 29 with no transition period, and urged her to ditch her "red lines".

Friends of Lucas said that May pushed back on the idea of a second referendum, arguing it would "look bad for parliament if it could not fulfil this instruction of the British people".
