Dixon Public Schools close from Tuesday to Thursday due to weather

School officials are closely monitoring the weather for changes in the forecast.

For the third school day in a row, Milwaukee Public Schools will be closed because of the winter weather.

The extreme cold could lead to some school closures this week.

The district joins Red Lake School District and Cass Lake-Bena Schools, where leaders opted to cancel Tuesday and Wednesday classes on Monday.

"The extreme cold poses a lot of issues for our school district", said Superintendent Craig Hockenberry. But when it comes to unsafe weather, many administrators would prefer a later school year. Student safety is our number one priority.

"If we can get our buses up and running - they are warm, our facilities are warm", said Kenton County School District spokeswoman Jessica Dykes. For rural schools like Norris, the superintendent must also consider the students who drive themselves to school and those students who have to wait for the bus. All Minneapolis Community Education evening classes and all athletic and school-sponsored activities are also canceled.

St. Paul Public Schools, Anoka-Hennepin Schools, Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan Public Schools and Osseo Area Schools have also announced they will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. Any time the temperature or wind chill temperature reaches the point at which exposed skin could experience frostbite, we consider closing school.

John Skretta says cancelling for snow and cancelling for wind chill are very different processes.

If your child walks to school, we suggest you try to make arrangements for a ride to school.
