During the 2016 segment, Behar, an outspoken liberal, displayed a 1970s-era photo of herself at a Halloween party when she was 29. In the photo, a young Behar can be seen with a curly coif and a decidedly darker skin tone. It was a Halloween party. She said that the hair was her own and that she had dressed as a "beautiful African woman".
Co-host Raven-Symone asked whether she had on tanning lotion. "Joy ... are you my auntie?!"
When Behar was 29 years old, she apparently dressed up as a "beautiful African woman" for Halloween, complete with makeup to make her skin darker. "That's my actual hair, though".
"I don't see how that is racist on Halloween", said Kelly, remarking on a cast member from Bravo's Real Housewives of NY getting into trouble for dressing up as legendary singer Diana Ross. He then admitted he did once use shoe polish to darken his skin to resemble Michael Jackson for a dance contest in 1984.
Behar answered that she was wearing makeup "that was a little bit darker than my skin".
I was so cute. Conservative blogger Matt Walsh wrote, "Megyn Kelly was sacked from her show for asking a hypothetical question about blackface. Joy Behar actually wore blackface, and admitted it, and showed a picture of it on TV, yet she still has her job". Gov. Ralph Northam has apologized but refuses to stand down after an image surfaced from his page in his medical school yearbook of a photo of a person in blackface and another in a Ku Klux Klan costume.
Reacting to Raven-Symoné's clear change of tone, Behar asked, "Why are you upset with me now?" One defender wrote, "Joy Behar means damn well and we should know this".
The audience and fellow co-hosts were demonstrably taken aback at how drastically different Behar looked, some of them giggling.
