Murray's accountants will be busy sorting things out now that he has announced his decision.
For former Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray, it's football over baseball.
"Football has been my love and passion my entire life", said Murray.
"I have started an extensive training program to further prepare myself for upcoming National Football League workouts and interviews".
The Oakland Athletics selected Murray with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2018 MLB June Amateur Draft.
Murray will be one of the top quarterback prospects of the 2019 draft and will get a chance to exhibit his skills at the NFL combine February 26-March 4 in Indianapolis and subsequent workouts for NFL talent evaluators ahead of the 2019 NFL Draft on April 25-27 in Nashville.
That Murray himself would answer the baseball-football debate with a tweet at 11:46 a.m.
Being a first-round pick is no guarantee of major league success, and Murray's immediate future was bus rides through the California League, not plate appearances in the big leagues.
In exchange for a more immediate payday and a quicker path to competing at his sport's highest level, of course, Murray will play a much more physically demanding game that comes with a heightened risk of both short- and long-term injury.
The NFL draft begins on April 25. He is expected to be an early draft pick in this year's NFL Draft. ESPN reported that Murray will return $1.29 million of the initial $1.5 million payment he received from the franchise and forfeit the final $3.16 million he would have received on March 1 entirely. "Obviously the fact that he would want to play quarterback, if he chooses the football route, is a little different than Deion or Bo or some of those guys", Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley said in November.
There will always be kids who choose baseball, either because they love it the most or because their talents on the diamond outstrip their skills on the gridiron or basketball court.
