According to reporting from Weigel, the Chicago Police Department found in the brothers" home: "bleach, a red hat, a receipt (PD says was for the rope) and a magazine that according to our source "was similar' to the one used in the letter that was sent to #Smollett".
The Smollett siblings' words of support come as Jussie Smollett refuses to meet with Chicago police after detectives obtained "new evidence" while interrogating two Nigerian brothers - Abimbola "Abel" and Olabinjo "Ola" Osundairo - said to have helped orchestrate the assault.
From the very beginning, Smollett has denied that he's been untruthful, and at first the police backed his claims, but that's changed since the brothers started cooperating with their investigation.
Anne Kavanagh, a spokeswoman for Smollett's lawyers, said they would "keep an active dialogue with Chicago police on his behalf".
Hours later, Chicago police release two men without charges after arresting them on suspicion of assaulting Smollett and holding them for almost 48 hours.
"Nothing is further from the truth and anyone claiming otherwise is lying", the statement from attorneys Todd Pugh and Victor P. Henderson said in a statement late Saturday. Kavanagh didn't immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday. We are not homophobic, and we are not anti-Trump.
Smollett, who is African-American and openly gay, reported he was physically attacked while he was getting a sandwich around 2 a.m. on January 29 near his home in downtown Chicago. Smollett also said the attackers poured some kind of chemical on him.
Cops couldn't find any video footage of the attack.
Police obtain and release images of two people they would like to question.
"[The Chicago Police Department] confirm to [Associated Press] report they're investigating a tip that on the night #JussieSmollett reported being attacked by two masked men he was in an elevator of his apartment building with two brothers".
Smollett also claimed the men yelled, "This is MAGA [Make America Great Again] country" while attacking him.
The two suspects - who are brothers and allegedly wearing masks - were arrested and then released.
