Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda, 24, was charged with attempted homicide after witnesses said a man either pushed or threw the 5 -year-old child at the mall in Bloomington and took off running after the incident, police said.
A U.S. man has been arrested after a five-year-old sustained life-threatening injuries from being pushed or thrown off a balcony at a shopping centre.
Aranda was arrested following the 10 a.m. incident that left the victim with life-threatening injuries.
Potts said they don't believe there is a relationship between the suspect and the child's family.

A little boy was reportedly thrown from the third floor of Mall of America on Friday morning.
A witness at the Bloomington mall told WCCO that a woman was screaming that someone threw her child from the third floor balcony.
Court records show Aranda was arrested on July 4, 2015, after police said he matched the description of a man throwing things off the upper level of the Mall of America to the lower level.
The child's family is at the hospital but no details were immediately available about the child's condition.
"Oh my God, my baby, someone threw him over the edge'". Police say he refused to give his name and resisted arrest.
The suspect ran down to the first floor and "was located inside the mall", Potts said.
According to public records, Arranda has been convicted of trespassing, fifth-degree assault and interfering with a police officer, all misdemeanors.
Police don't have an idea about possible motive, Potts said.
Police are working with mall officials to see if there is video of the crime, Potts said. Bloomington Police is investigating the incident.
A Mall of America spokesperson said in a statement that any additional information about the incident will come from police.
However, witnesses at the scene described the child being thrown or pushed by a man.
