"Far too long we have lived with the danger of being a second class citizen and frankly, I'm exhausted of it".
US President Donald Trump has delivered a fresh barrage of criticism against Rep. Ilhan Omar, which appears to be a follow-up of his previous 9/11-related verbal jab in her direction. Pelosi added that she advises members of her party to be vigilant about anti-Semitism "raising its head" both overseas and in the United States.
Writing on Twitter, Trump blasted both Omar and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for defending Omar after he tweeted a video on Friday suggesting Omar had been dismissive of the September 11, 2001, attacks. She is one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress and the first person to wear a hijab in the House chamber.
Donald Trump's spokesman Sarah Sanders defended the President on Sunday (April 14) against accusations that he was inciting violence toward a Muslim congresswoman after he tweeted a video of her spliced with footage of the Sept 11, 2001, attacks.
Violent crimes and other acts of hate by right-wing extremists and white nationalists are on the rise in this country...
Some called Trump's move Islamophobic and an "incitement" to violence against the Somali-American politician, while others said it put her "life in danger". "President Trump must take down his disrespectful and unsafe video", she said. "It has to stop", said Omar.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Tuesday that the Democratic Party has not been tainted by anti-Semitism, disputing claims by President Trump and his Republican supporters. Addressing the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) earlier this month, Omar commented about the stigma towards American Muslims in the wake of 9/11.
Later on Monday, Trump plans to visit a trucking company in Burnsville, Minnesota, about 15 miles (24 km) outside Minneapolis.
"Look, she's been very disrespectful to this country". In doing so, and by refusing to pledge allegiance to Israel, she's faced vicious smears calling her antisemitic (including from Trump). But, she says, "no matter how much we have tried to be the best neighbor, people have always worked on finding a way to not allow for every single civil liberty to be extended to us".
Last week Omar was denounced by conservative politicians and media outlets for comments in a speech that were misconstrued as minimizing the seriousness of the 9/11 attack.
KSTP-TV's broadcast then edited the video, cutting to Trump continuing his thoughts on Omar.
