The 37-year-old mayor said he would send a letter to the federal Department of Justice's civil rights division and notify the local prosecutor that he'd like an independent investigator appointed.
Buttigieg took responsibility for the incident but said that the facts of the case were still under investigation. The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit is investigating the shooting. They grew angry when he could not explain why the police officer's body camera was not on during the shooting. "So at the end of the day, I'm responsible".
In the question-and-answer section, one attendee told Buttigieg to reorganize his department by Friday of next week to "get the racists off the streets", in reference to law enforcement officers.
The View co-hosts took note of the passion on display and had harsh words for how Buttigieg handled his constituents upset with Mayor Pete's performance.
On Sunday, Buttigieg shared his thoughts on how his stop back in South Bend will impact his campaign.
South Bend Common Councilwoman Regina Williams-Preston, who was present at the meeting, called on Buttigieg to expand his outreach among the African American leaders in South Bend.
"There's more momentum to deal with this than ever", he said.
People in the town hall interrupted after the chief and the mayor tried to explain why the officer's body cam was not turned on so that authorities could review the shooting.
"I acknowledge that we haven't done enough", he said. "We know how smart you are, now let's see what you did. It's my job to face it".
"So far not so good", Kilmeade concluded of Buttigieg's 2020 campaign results. Patton has also thrown his support behind Buttigieg in the presidential race.
Asked after the town hall meeting about the latest shootings, Buttigieg described them as a "reversal" after progress in curbing violence in South Bend earlier this year and in 2018. "I believe that he has - I have full confidence that he could lead our nation as well".
South Bend resident: "The Mayor Rahm Emanuel quit being the mayor because there was a cover-up".
Ryan O'Neill responded to a 9-1-1 call about auto break-ins near the Central High apartment complex in the downtown area.
This town hall comes days before Buttigieg is scheduled to participate in the Democratic primary debates.
According to police accounts, Logan then threw a knife at O'Neill, who responded by fatally shooting the man.
