Reports of Facebook Being Down Started Pouring in Around 10 a.m.
Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp were malfunctioning throughout most of the day on Wednesday and into the night.
Twitter was having "issues" too with direct messages and notifications.
Coming to the outage itself, Facebook has said, was due to a bug, which was accidentally triggered during a routine maintenance operation. The interruption also extended to its other services, including Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp.
A Facebook spokesperson was quoted as saying that the company "triggered an issue" during routine maintenance, which made it hard for some people to send or upload photos and videos.
"We're sorry that some people are having trouble uploadng or sending images, videos and other files on our apps".
Facebook, which owns the three sites, is yet to comment on the issue. A number of users were also unable to log in. Apparently, only text messaging is working on WhatsApp, when users are trying to send photos, videos, and voice messages it is not going through. "We're working on a fix and will follow up as soon as we have an update for you", Twitter's support team tweeted.
In March, Facebook and Instagram suffered their longest period of disruption ever. Though frustrating, the issues usually resolve within a short period of time and rarely last more than a couple of hours at most. Even the upload option appeared to be affected for some time, with users unable to post anything on the app for over an hour.
