The WF-1000XM3 is built around Sony's proprietary QN1e noise canceling chip. Thanks to Dual Noise Sensor Technology, one feed-forward microphone and one feed-back microphone on the surface of the headphones catch more of the ambient sound around you. Sony's noise elimination technology is enhanced by the HD QN1e Noise Canceling processor and Dual Noise Sensor technology.
One thing that is notable, however, is that enabling active noise cancellation on the Sony earbuds actually cuts the battery life by a quarter, reducing it from eight hours down to six. With the charging case, the company claims the user gets up to 24 hours of charging with noise-canceling on or up to 32 hours of juice without NC.
With quick charging capabilities, ten minutes of charging claims to deliver 90 mins of playing time.
Sony Electronics is a subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America and an affiliate of Sony Corporation (Japan), one of the most comprehensive entertainment companies in the world, with a portfolio that encompasses electronics, music, motion pictures, mobile, gaming, robotics and financial services.
When it comes to battery life, the WF-1000XM3 aren't too spectacular by themselves.
For ease, you can use Quick Attention mode to communicate without removing your earbuds. There are also touch controls on the outside, to control music playback, answer or end calls, adjust volume, and trigger the assistant on your smartphone. This last point would nearly be required if the company were going to tackle ANC, of course, since the current AirPods let ambient sound leak in like an open window - there's no point in offering active noise cancellation when the headphones themselves can't prevent outside noise in the first place.
Instead of WH-1000XM3, however, this model is called WF-1000XM3, whereby noise suppression also takes place here. You can purchase them in Black or Silver that actually is closer to golden in some parts.
A full charge will net you about 6 hours of playback.
The WH-1000XM3's noise-canceling abilities, audio performance, and many features made the $348 headphones one of our IFA 2018 top picks and a category victor in our Best of Headphones feature. The case provides up to 3 additional charges.
