As Gurman notes, Amazon could opt to shelve the robot for good at any time, but having recently taken engineers off of other projects to work on the robot, it seems likely it will hit the market eventually. The reports suggest prototypes for the next-gen Amazon Echo already exist, and are said to be wider than the current model due to the inclusion of at least four tweeters.
Bloomberg also claims that Amazon could announce a new "higher quality Echo speaker" this year. Other companies have attempted to release voice-enabled robots in the past, but few have seen mainstream success. Bloomberg said that an unnamed Amazon spokesperson declined to comment on the project. It'll get around by using a collection of computer vision cameras, and Bloomberg's sources claim that prototypes come to about waist height, so it sounds like this has the potential to be a fairly large robot.
Amazon has previously attempted to improve the Echo's sound with tweaks and offered a standalone subwoofer and device that links the speakers to a stereo.
Amazon will also introduce a new Hi-Fi option for Amazon Music which will work well with this new premium Echo. Users can choose either Amazon's Alexa or the Google Assistant, making the Sonos One and Sonos Beam, the only smart speaker products to do so.
The Seattle-based company typically rolls out a slew of devices in the fall, but sometimes scatters one-off product launches throughout the year.
Amazon is also reportedly experimenting with other new form factors for its Alexa assistant beyond the Echo and the other devices now available. Not saying that'd be dumb - but it's also sort of pointless to shell out hundreds of dollars if what you're getting is basically the equivalent of sticking an Echo speaker on a Roomba. Two speakers that continue to do battle in an ever-increasing line-up of AI-powered smart home products. A tweeter is a small speaker created to disperse high frequencies throughout a room, according to Lifewire. The HomePod isn't selling just as Apple expected, and the organization as of late dropped the cost.
