ESPN, USA Today and sports website The Athletic say the Grizzlies have approved talks between the Lakers and Howard, who led the National Basketball Association in rebounds when he played for the Lakers in the 2012-13 season.
"It just wasn't the right fit for me at the time", Howard told the Los Angeles Times.
Howard could return to Los Angeles for a second stint with the Lakers in 2019-20. They're still favored to win the title this upcoming season, after all.
According to ESPN, which cited unidentified sources, the team is planning to hold individual workouts to evaluate centers Dwight Howard, Joakim Noah and Mo Speights this week in Los Angeles.
Howard still has $5.6 million left in the a year ago of his contract, which could be useful as a trade asset, or he could work out a contract buyout with the franchise - expected to find a resolution sooner than later. But now, barring a miracle trade, there won't be much choice. Searching out the trade market or digging deeper on the free agent market could be a good move for them. After connecting on 22 3-pointers over the first nine years of his career, Speights advanced his game, hitting 213 over the last three seasons at a 37.2 clip.
Los Angeles has high expectations for this season, especially after acquiring Anthony Davis.
The team is in need of a center following the ACL injury suffered by offseason addition DeMarcus Cousins, and per media reports, the team is interested in current Memphis Grizzly Dwight Howard. He averaged 5.0 points and 5.6 rebounds in 16.0 minutes per game.
Speights spent last season in China with the Guangzhou Long-Lions.
Nonetheless, Howard did average 12.8 points and 9.2 rebounds in limited action for the Wizards this past year. He served as a backup center on the Golden State Warriors' championship-winning squad in 2015.
