Kentucky Fried Chicken is the latest fast-food giant to explore serving meatless meat, saying Monday that it will test Beyond Meat's chicken substitute this week in one of the chain's Atlanta restaurants.
As part of the partnership, KFC will have on the menu Beyond nuggets and boneless wings, which it boasts will be identical in taste to traditional chicken. KFC will use customer feedback to determine whether to conduct a broader test of the product or to roll it out nationally.
"KFC Beyond Fried Chicken is so delicious, our customers will find it hard to tell that it's plant-based", KFC president Kevin Hochman said in a statement.
Plant-based meat is everwhere these days, including at fast food chains.
The new chicken, KFC says, will offering the finger lickin' good fried chicken flavor those who love KFC are used to. The company said it is the first us fast food company to offer such a product.
KFC, however, believes the new product is strong enough to work inside its restaurants. Typically, the vegan-friendly options are available for beef products but it looks like KFC is readying to hop on this new trend of plant-based food.
I got a chance to taste the Beyond Fried Chicken offerrings at the KFC test kitchen in Louisville last week, where longtime KFC head chef Bob Das served up samples to me and a few other journalists. "To be able to bring Beyond Fried Chicken, in all of its KFC-inspired deliciousness to market, speaks to our collective ability to meet the consumer where they are and accompany them on their journey".
