"I don't see it connecting to anything in the future", Phillips said during a Q&A at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday.
Some movies just want to watch the world burn. IGN's Jim Vejvoda gave Joker a 10, saying, "Featuring a riveting, fully realized, and Oscar-worthy performance by Joaquin Phoenix, Joker would work just as well as an engrossing character study without any of its DC Comics trappings; that it just so happens to be a brilliant Batman-universe movie is icing on the Batfan cake".

EW's review of Joker took the unusual step of not grading the film, noting, "entertainment doesn't exist in a vacuum, and a movie with the message this one hammers home again and again - that life is nasty and short; that no one cares; that you might as well burn it all down - feels too volatile, and frankly too scary, to separate from the very real violence committed by young men like Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck in America nearly every day".
After winning the grand prize at the Venice Film Festival earlier this week, the movie Joker has premiered in North America. Continuing, Phillips says that he has appreciated all versions of the Joker, with making special mention of Jared Leto's version of the villain from 2016's Suicide Squad and Jack Nicholson's iteration of the character from 1989's Batman.
Joker hits theaters on October 4.
But beyond the movie's tone and standalone nature, it also follows the studio Warner Bros.' recent superhero movie strategy that "Joker" wouldn't tie in to other movies.
"You tell me if any of this is bullsh-" Dafoe said to Phoenix, before continuing his speech with a particularly pertinent message: "The point is he's always surprising us, and himself".
Since this movie is rated R, this movie, though not connected to the DC universe, could end up being called one of the darkest DC movies made.
"Aquaman" grossed over $US1 billion worldwide.
Some have wondered if the movie will make viewers root for or against the character.
Banderas told AFP the story had to be presented as comedy "because otherwise we can cry", while Oldman said they wanted to portray a "corrupt circus".
"We're having fun", chided Letterman, "I'll come to your house and chew gum". And "The Batman" cast Pattinson, who replaced former Batman actor Ben Affleck.
