In New York City, protesters doused a famous statue of a charging bull near Wall Street with fake blood.
"Today, Oct. 7, is what they call "global rebellion" which is a series of direct actions, non-violent, peaceful protests that are occurring all around the world to draw attention to the urgency of the climate crisis", one protester, who identified himself only as Kevin, told CP24.
"We all share an interest in climate protection, and the Paris climate targets are our standard in this", Helge Braun, the chief of staff for German Chancellor Angela Merkel, told ZDF television.
Dutch police said they had arrested 50 people after Extinction Rebellion protesters occupied a bridge outside the famed Rijksmuseum art gallery. Reports said the officers were acting "with restraint" as they faced little resistance while "carrying people away" from the area.
In London and Amsterdam, in Sydney and NY, and in other major cities dotting the map in between, demonstrators crammed main arteries and were arrested by the hundreds Monday as they railed against government inaction on climate change.
Protesters will be lying down in traffic lines on the Bloor Street Viaduct to show that major disruptions are inevitable if society fails to act on climate change.
Meanwhile, Extinction Rebellion ringleader Eric "Serge" Herbert avoided a conviction in courts after allegedly being caught protesting in Brisbane's CBD yesterday, breaching his bail conditions.
According to an account of his comments briefed out by No 10 on Monday evening, he said: "I hope that when we go out from this place tonight and we are waylaid by importunate nose-ringed climate change protesters we remind them that [Thatcher] was also right about greenhouse gases".
More than a thousand protesters were arrested by police during protests the group staged in London in July, with hundreds of them are expected to appear in courts starting from this week.
Nine other protesters were arrested in Brisbane as climate-related protests continued around Australia.
That protest began before dawn.
Key sites, including Westminster and Lambeth bridges will also be targeted, in addition to protests outside the Houses of Parliament and key Government departments.
The Canadian protests did not attract the same numbers seen in some European cities where hundreds of activists turned out in force, but nonetheless sparked anger among people caught up in major traffic delays.
"We have to take our feet and we have to put them on that line. and we've drawn the line at ANZ bank".
Central Metropolitan Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Mick Willing APM, said public safety is the number one priority for police during any protest activity.
"By comparison to what we saw yesterday... it's much less disruptive". Police said the protests were peaceful. Police said 33 activists were taken to their premises and three were arrested for resisting orders by anti-riot officers. Members of the rebellion have been demonstrating for months, but Monday's was an internationally coordinated event. Protesters ignored police calls for them to move to a nearby square.
One group has locked themselves to barrels filled with concrete, while others have blocked a road with a trailer.
