Increased demand for Samsung's OLED display panels used in handsets by competitors - including Apple's new iPhone 11 - is also expected to help improve the company's quarterly profit.
Operating profit for Q3 is expected to come in at $6.43 billion (₩7.7 trillion), slightly higher than a Refinitiv Smart estimate of $5.9 billion (₩7.1 trillion), but down 56.2 percent from a year ago.
Samsung's profits have taken a beating over the past year, largely because of a slump in its memory chip business.
Samsung also expect sales to decline in the quarter to £42.3 billion, down from £44.6 billion for the same period previous year. Since the end of previous year, Samsung Electronics, the world's highest revenue semiconductor company, has been in trouble. Flash memory sales count for around two-thirds of Samsung's revenue overall.
Memory chip makers, including Samsung and local smaller rival SK Hynix, have said they expect the market to pick up later in the year. According to industry analysts speaking with The Korea Herald, Samsung is actually doing remarkably well considering how poor the demand is for chips universally.
"The IT and Mobile Communications division of Samsung performed better than in the second quarter as high-end smartphones, including Galaxy Note 10 launched in August, are selling well", an industry insider told Asia Times.
The firm is the flagship subsidiary of the giant Samsung Group, by far the biggest of the family-controlled conglomerates that dominate business in the world's 11th-largest economy, and crucial to South Korea's economic health. Before then, of course, it will expand the availability of the 5G versions of the Note 10 and release the folding Galaxy Fold phone.
The analysts said Samsung's smartphone sales recovered thanks to its revamped mid-range Galaxy A series, which enjoyed popularity in Southeast Asia and Europe. Year-over-year, we expect Samsung to post revenue that's literally half as good as it was in the same quarter of 2018. "Data centre customers, a major driver for memory chip business, are pursuing conservative investment for the time being, not particularly uplifting news for Samsung".
Samsung won't provide net income or break out divisional performance until it releases final results later this month.
