Four people died and three more were injured in an early morning shooting in Brooklyn, New York.
He said the families of the victims had not been notified but that two victims appeared to live outside NY while the others lived throughout Brooklyn.
According to Shea, evidence of gambling, including card playing, and two firearms were found at the scene.
The victims, who have not been identified, ranged in age from 32 to 49 years old, Shea disclosed during a press briefing near the shooting scene. Police officials said during the news conference that the incident did not appear to be gang-related.
Three wounded people were taken to hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening, Shea said.
An eighth person sustained a minor leg injury trying to get away from the shooting, which happened in the Crown Heights area of Brooklyn.
Chief of Patrol Rodney Harrison said police have received no complaints in recent years about activity at the illegal spot.
But police couldn't immediately describe the type of building in which the shooting took place.
Police say the shooting occurred at 74 Utica Avenue, in the Weeksville neighborhood of Brooklyn and gave no additional information whether any suspects were arrested.
Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Twitter that the city "awoke to senseless gun violence".
