Union workers are existing on strike pay that is only a fraction of their usual wage. They argue that they had given up pay raises and made other concessions to keep GM afloat during its 2009 trip through bankruptcy protection. Top-paid production employees earn around $1,220 for a 40-hour week. The strike pay hike was previously set to increase on January 1.
September 16, 2019: The UAW calls its first nationwide strike against GM since 2007. He thought the strike would only last a week or two.
"To hear this news that we might not get another General Motors product, it's just devastating", he said. "I know they would do that for us".
The increase comes as talks continue between GM and the UAW after the Detroit automaker reviewed a counterproposal that the union submitted to GM on Friday night.
"It includes improved wages and health care benefits, over $7B in US investments and 5,400 jobs", the company said in a tweet. News reports show that some of GM's promised investment would come to areas that lost plants, such as Lordstown, Ohio, but UAW officials have said the guarantees aren't enough.
Dittes didn't offer any details or tout any gains in the tentative agreement. "Out of respect for our members, we will refrain from commenting on the details until the UAW GM leaders gather together and receive all details".

Mack Trucks manufactures heavy-duty Class 8 trucks, engines and transmissions. Additionally, it will be investing $1.3 Billion through other ventures near Lordstown, Ohio plant, creating roughly 1,000 jobs.
The UAW GM National Council said it would meet Thursday for a vote on whether to recommend the tentative deal to the full membership, and whether to continue the strike until members ratify the agreement, or stop it pending full membership approval.
1970: The UAW - reeling after the death of its longtime leader Walter Reuther in a plane crash - struck GM for 67 days, idling 400,000 workers. He noted that the company has invested more than $400 million in USA plants and its logistics network over the last decade.
According to the UAW, the increase will be applied to "all UAW members on strike and allow members striking at General Motors and Aramark to take on part-time jobs without reducing their strike pay - as long as they perform their picket duty".
The brokerage stated GM may now have to remodify its target of $4.5 billion in cost savings through 2020, declared past year, as production curtailments and labor-related cost decreases may not happen as fast as the company had expected.
