For now, the Broncos are planning to promote Brett Rypien from the practice squad to serve as Allen's backup.
If Allen steps into the lead role and plays well right off the bat, who knows which direction Denver will decide to go in, regarding the quarterback of the future.
Fangio said Flacco will be evaluated after the bye in two weeks but that he didn't think he'd land on IR.
Flacco was sacked three times by the Colts, including on the game's final play, and 11 times in the past two games. Joe Flacco has not done enough for the team. "I think right at this minute they don't think, but those things are fluid".
Since, Allen has been on the Jaguars' and Los Angeles Rams' rosters, had a short stint on Rams injured reserve, been on the Rams' practice squad and been Flacco's backup since the Broncos claimed him off waivers September 1.
With the injury coming now, the Broncos might even consider sitting Flacco for the rest of the season, especially with very slim odds of making the playoffs this year. The Broncos haven't scored more than 24 points since Week 7 of last season. Flacco sustained a herniated disk that will keep him out of the Browns game and could be season-ending.
Browns-Broncos viewers, however, will be treated to one of CBS' top crews in the booth: the excitable Kevin "With No Regard for Human Life" Harlan and the always insightful Rich Gannon, who got us through all those otherwise forgettable broadcasts during the Brandon Weedon era. They liked Allen's work in a similar scheme with the Rams, and he threw for 162 yards against the Broncos on August 24 in the preseason in a little over a quarter or work.
"We want to make sure he's ready before we put him out there, " Fangio said.
Fangio added that Flacco could be placed on injured reserve with the injury.
"Obviously I trust them to put the plan in place whenever they feel it's necessary", Lock said, "whenever they feel it's best for me to come back and practice or come back and play. because, like I said, I haven't taken a snap with anyone, so when I come back they want to get me some practice reps before they put me into a game".
In the meantime, Allen will be the sixth different starter for the Broncos (2-6) since the start of the 2017 season. Getting in field goal range isn't that tough.
"Stop saying 'but.' I just told you the clock was running and we had a penalty", Mayfield said to Tony Grossi, a reporter for 850 WKNR radio, an ESPN affiliate in Cleveland. "I've learned a lot from him in the few, short weeks we've been together". The fact I have a whole week to prepare is definitely helpful.
