The Penn State field hockey team (7-11, 4-4 Big Ten) upset the Michigan Wolverines (13-6, 5-3 Big Ten) 2-1 in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex.
"This team's been through so much - on the field and off - over the last three years", Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck said after the game. This is who we are. Hamler wound up instead in the hands of Antoine Winfield, in spite of an obvious pass interference against the Nittany Lion receiver.
The outcome will have a significant impact on the Big Ten championship chase. The Gophers entered Saturday's game ranked No. 17 in the College Football Playoff Rankings despite being off to their first 8-0 start since 1941. True to form for their profession, however, Fleck and Franklin have each taken the one-game-at-a-time mentality to the extreme, insisting on the isolated goal of going 1-0 this week. You don't have to worry about what happened before. The ball floated harmlessly toward the middle of the field, but the Nittany Lions were unable to come up with the interception. They won the Big Ten title in 2016, though, presenting the Gophers a program to strive for.
PLAYERS OF THE GAME For the sake of fairness, Minnesota's passing game, in totality, deserves the nod here. "The only way to continue to have that is keep having success in these big games, big moments". The announced attendance for November home games past year for the Gophers was just 31,068 (Purdue) and 32,134 (Northwestern). Florida State became the latest example, after the recent firing there. The Penn State offense responded with a strong 10-play, 69-yard drive, but it was cut short by yet another interception by Winfield Jr.
Minnesota: Plays at Iowa next Saturday. Coming off a quick possession to open the second half, the Gophers moved the ball enough to give Herbers a ideal opportunity to pin the Nittany Lions deep, which he did with a 36-yard attempt down to Penn State's 9-yard line. The Gophers capitalized with another quick score, as Morgan hit Tyler Johnson for a 38-yard touchdown pass. Minnesota led 21-10 about halfway through the second. The Nittany Lions and their elite rush defense will smother the Gophers all day.
And then the Golden Gophers put up 24 (TWENTY-FOUR) points in the first half - more than any other opponent had scored against Penn State in four quarters this season.
