A 16-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy died.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says a Saugus student carried out the attack on his birthday, carrying a.45-caliber pistol to school on the day he turned 16.
He did say that authorities had recovered an additional six weapons in the suspect's home, on top of guns that were registered to his late father, and the rifle he used in the attack.
The suspect has been identified as Nathaniel Berhow, the Los Angeles Times and CNN report, citing unnamed law-enforcement sources. The suspect took a gun from his backpack, shot five students, and then himself, they claim.
"I hate to have Saugus be added to the names of Columbine, Parkland, Sandy Hook", Villanueva said, listing other terrible school shootings at the midday news conference.
Another friend of Berhow, who asked not to be named, told CNN that he knew Berhow had access to guns and had grown up around them but that nobody had anxious because he was responsible and knew how to use them. They are investigating to see who else had access to the account.
The other student who died was 14.

It was later removed, and investigators do not know who made the change, Wegener said. This situation was in flux, and law enforcement have not released many details, citing the ongoing investigation. Investigators have obtained a search warrant for what they believe to be the suspect's home.
