Five people, including three children, are dead in a case of domestic violence in the Paradise Hills neighborhood of San Diego on Saturday, authorities said.
On Thursday, two students were killed and three others injured in a school shooting at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, California.
The father, 31, was pronounced dead on the scene, along with the 29-year-old mother and a 3-year-old boy, Dobbs said. An 11-year-old boy was hospitalized and undergoing surgery Saturday morning.
At 6:49 a.m. local time Saturday, dispatch received a 911 call in which arguing could be heard and someone was being asked to leave, according to police. The dispatcher claimed to have heard loud arguing in the background.
Peering in a window, officers saw a small child covered in blood, Dobbs said.
Officers had initially told media the 5-year-old and 9-year-old boys had died and the 11-year-old boy was in surgery, but said during Saturday's press conference they could not confirm which child was in critical condition.
No arrests have been made and there are no outstanding suspects so far, police say.
Police said they would not be identifying the victims at this time.
Police said the shooting was related to domestic violence and called it a "murder-suicide". Officers had responded to a property dispute at the address around November 1, police said, and instructed the mother, now deceased, how to obtain a restraining order.
"We believe the male came over this morning, there was some kind of argument, disagreement, used a handgun and shot his family before turning the gun on himself", he said.
Police were last called to the granny flat on November 1 after the estranged husband had arrived and asked for tools from his wife, authorities said. It was unclear how many people total lived in the compound.
"The man was trying to get some tools from his wife while they were separated".
Police Chief David Nisleit told reporters that the apparent murder-suicide is "difficult for me to even think about" as a father and husband.
Gordon said she hadn't known the children personally, but saw them playing with the other neighborhood kids outside and riding their bicycles frequently.
