Nathan Bain is the name that will go down in college basketball history has the player who hit the game-winning layup that helped Stephen F. Austin pull off an all-timer of an upset over No. 1 Duke on Tuesday night.
Bain played 34 minutes for the Lumberjacks.
"I looked up at the clock", Bain said on court after the game.
"I'm trying real hard not to get emotional". It's like a layup drill.
I have a feeling, they're not going to care. Jones penetrated and tried to pass it to Matthew Hurt, but Hurt couldn't grab it cleanly and the Lumberjacks jumped on the loose ball.
"Deny the ball, pressure teams, turn them over", Bain said.
Stephen F. Austin had a timeout remaining, but Bain drove 75 feet for the victor instead.
Stephen F. Austin forward Nathan Bain (23) and guard David Kachelries (4) celebrated Bain's game winning basket against Duke in overtime on Tuesday. About two hours after the game, the total amount raised was close to $7,000. SFA was a 28.5 point and +8000 underdog coming into this game and yet they still found a way to win... let that sink in for a moment.
Bain is a native of the Bahamas, which was slammed hard by Hurricane Dorian on September 1. "I just want to make my country proud". "You know my family lost a whole lot this year - I'm not gonna cry n TV - my family lost a whole lot this year, and I'm just playing this game for them, you know", Bain said. The Lumberjacks face only one more top-100 opponent the rest of the season and can't possibly build a successful at-large résumé.
"We've been battling the flu", Stephen F. Austin coach Kyle Keller said. "I thought today was a big step for us. Just next man up, like they talk about in the National Football League".
Duke led by 15 at one point but a veteran SFA team never went away. The Blue Devils hit just 11 of 24 free throws after halftime, and the offense was a disjointed mess in overtime.
The Blue Devils were 28-point favorites against the Lumberjacks - who last visited the NCAA tournament in 2016 - and yet the two teams were tied 81-81 heading into overtime at the always daunting Cameron Indoor Stadium.
"They were better. Bottom line", Krzyzewski said. But we're a tough people, we're a tough nation, and there's a lot of people backing us and helping us. "Get it on the rim to give us a chance". We lost just about everything. So we weren't deserving of winning.
