11 people injured after shooting in New Orleans

The NOPD said the shooting took place on the edge of New Orleans' French Quarter, one of the most historic neighborhoods in the city.

NOPD said they detained an individual near the scene.

Two people are in critical condition, with shots to the chest and torso respectively.

The victims were taken to local area hospitals with 5 going to University Hospital and the other 5 going to Tulane Hospital. Police believe the person may have had involvement in the incident but they are not under arrest at this time.

Local media quoted police Superintendent Shaun Ferguson as saying two were in critical condition, although there were no further details.

New Orleans police, however, said a person of interest was in custody, but their role in the gunfire was unclear, NOLA.com reports.

The New Orleans Police Department is investigating a mass shooting that happened early in the morning on Sunday, December 1, 2019.

Police said on their Twitter feed that "one suspect had been apprehended near the scene".

New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell also pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice.

"The shootings on Canal Street early this morning were an ugly disruption of an otherwise attractive holiday weekend", New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell wrote in a statement on Twitter. He said a group of officers was stationed on the same block where the shooting occurred. No law enforcement officers were injured in the incident, the agency noted. Witnesses are asked to call the New Orleans Police at 504-658-6080 or the Crime Caller at 504-822-1111.
