A House of Representatives committee is expected to vote in favor of formal impeachment charges against U.S. President Donald Trump late on Thursday evening, with a full vote in the Democratic-controlled chamber expected in the middle of next week.
The House is expected to take up the two articles of impeachment next week. The Democrats hold the majority in that body.
He is also accused of obstructing Congress by failing to co-operate with the House investigation.
But Republicans have circled the wagons around their president, insisting he has done no wrong and accusing Democrats of risky overreach. And with those articles headed to the House floor next week, he appears to be warming to a quick election-year Senate trial.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, said on Thursday that he woulddefer="defer" to President Donald Trump's lawyers for guidance on creating the GOP strategy regarding an impeachment trial.
The central allegation is that Trump pressured Ukraine by withholding $391 million in military aid while seeking a commitment from Ukrainian officials to investigate Joe Biden, the former US vice president and one of Trump's potential opponents in the 2020 election.
Van Drew had previously said that he doesn't "see anything there worthy of actually taking a president out of office" and that he wouldn't support impeachment, leading to the suggestion that a liberal Democrat might step up to challenge him in the primary. "The President looks forward to receiving in the Senate the fair treatment and due process which continues to be disgracefully denied to him by the House", White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham said. Democrat Bill Clinton was impeached in 1998 for perjury for lying about a sexual relationship with a White House intern, but he was acquitted in the Senate.
The president also took a shot at Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, a National Security Council Ukraine expert who testified during the impeachment probe and raised concerns about an American president asking another government to investigate United States citizens. He's running for president on the Democratic side. Senate members will also have the authority to remove Trump from office if he is found guilty.
