"While the Iranian nation was mourning [for the loss of their dear ones in the Ukrainian plane incident], Trump shed crocodile tears for people in Persian language and claimed that he was standing beside the Iranian people", he told reporters in Tehran.
"They are lying that our enemy is America, our enemy is right here", a group of protesters outside a university in Tehran chanted, according to video clips posted on Twitter.
People are heard coughing as they try to escape the fumes, with one woman calling out in Farsi: "They fired tear gas at people!"
Another video shows a woman being carried away in the aftermath as a blood trail can be seen on the ground.
"Oh my God, she's bleeding nonstop", one person shouts.
Photos and video after the incident showed pools of blood on the footpath.
"The police did not shoot at the gatherings at all because a restraint order (had been issued) for police in the capital".
Iranian officials said its armed forces were on high alert in case of American retaliation, which led it to believe the Ukrainian plane was an enemy aircraft.
