Kirby Smart has spent the past year seeing his offensive philosophy pilloried, or at least what people assume is his offensive philosophy, the much-maligned "man-ball" that seems so outdated. Georgia ranked only 72nd in the nation in passing. Georgia has emerged as an SEC power and played in the 2017 national championship game.
Monken didn't call plays in Cleveland (former head coach Freddie Kitchens did that), and reportedly wasn't thrilled with what was going on. The Bulldogs finished with a 26-14 win over Baylor in the Sugar Bowl.
Monken does have experience at the college level, as he served as the offensive coordinator for Oklahoma State in 2011 and '12. Cleveland's new coach, Kevin Stefanski, did not retain him.
"We are excited to add Todd to our staff", Smart said in a news release. He went to Tampa Bay from Southern Mississippi, where he spent three seasons (2013-15) as head coach and compiled a 13-25 record.
Monken's history would certainly suggest a change is coming, as he's always been involved in offenses that have been a bit more pass-heavy. He became the passing game coordinator at LSU and labored as an assistant at Louisiana Tech and Eastern Michigan.
After the 2019 season saw Georgia football finish 49th in the country in scoring offense, it was clear something had to change with the Georgia offense. Fromm, Swift and three offensive linemen are leaving early to enter the National Football League draft. High receiver Lawrence Cager and tight ends Eli Wolf and Charlie Woerner are departing, and beginning offensive lineman Cade Mays transferred to Tennessee.
The competition to replace Fromm will include Wake Forest graduate transfer Jamie Newman.
Monken came to OSU in 2001 as part of Les Miles' inaugural staff, then left with Miles to go to LSU after four seasons. Aged Ole Omit coach Matt Luke previously joined Georgia's workers to interchange offensive line coach Sam Pittman, who left to change into head coach at Arkansas.
