Friday morning Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) weighed in on the virus and said he has asked Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to look into "whether temporary travel restrictions from affected areas in China may be necessary".
A second case of the new coronavirus has been confirmed in the US, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Friday morning. Overall, the CDC is now investigating 63 people (including the two that tested positive) in 22 states for a possible infection with the new virus.
Infected people have been reported in 29 provinces of China, along with the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao. China has issued massive travel bans in hard-hit sections of that country to try to stem the spread of the virus.
"The risk to people here in North Carolina at this time is very low", Moore said.
The new virus comes from a large family of coronaviruses, some causing nothing worse than a cold.
Health officials are also keeping an eye on 43 people the Washington man had been in contact with after returning from China.
The number of cases that have been exported - and the number of countries outside China that have reported cases - continue to grow as well.
There are now more than 830 confirmed cases of coronavirus, and at least 26 people have died from the virus, according to the Washington Post.
In a sign that the city is feeling the pressure, Hubei governor Jiang Chaoliang said in a meeting Friday that Wuhan must "make every effort to increase isolation places and designated hospital beds", according to a statement on the government's website.
"Make no mistake, though, this is an emergency in China", said World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
According to Dr. Cori, the genome of the new virus shows it is a close relation of SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome), though for the time being is much less deadly.
All but one of the 18 deaths have been in Hubei, but there are more than 600 cases, including several overseas.
The hospital will have a capacity of 1,000 beds spread over 25,000 square metres (270,000 square feet), the official Xinhua news agency said.
"It may yet become one", said the WHO's boss.
USA authorities have screened more than 2,000 travelers from China on 200 flights without identifying any new patients.
Hospital staff performed a full clinical examination and worked with public health officials to arrange testing for the novel coronavirus at the CDC.
In a bid to limit the risk of importing cases to the USA, earlier this week the CDC ordered airlines to redirect all flights from Wuhan to five airports where individualized screening of arriving passengers could be conducted.
Health officials warn patients to call a health care provider before seeking treatment for potential coronavirus symptoms so the appropriate preventive measures can be taken.
