Americans returning to the USA who were in Hubei province - the epicenter of the outbreak - 14 days prior to returning to the country will be subject to up to 14 days of a mandatory quarantine, "to ensure they're provided proper medical care and health screening", Azar told reporters at a White House press briefing. Elsewhere, local authorities placed growing restrictions on travel and business.
The number of dead stood at 213 on Friday morning while the number of confirmed cases was 9,692.
In Indonesia, authorities have quarantined more than 40,000 workers at a Chinese-controlled industrial complex on Sulawesi island, although the country has not reported any cases of the virus. The death toll rose by 46 to 259.
The number of coronavirus cases worldwide has overtaken that of the similar Sars epidemic, which spread to more than two dozen countries in 2003.

In a bid to stop the contagion, the government has extended the holiday through this weekend and urged people to avoid public gatherings.
China's Foreign Ministry has blasted the United States government for restricting the entry of Chinese nationals due to the coronavirus outbreak, which this week was declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organisation.
President Donald Trump signed a presidential proclamation to temporarily deny entry to foreign nationals, except the immediate family members of US citizens and permanent residents, who have traveled in China in the past two weeks.
Italian cruise company, Costa, announced on Friday that it would not allow anyone who had been in China in the last 14 days on board - including guests, visitors or crew members of any nationality.

A number of major USA airlines have already suspended service from the U.S.to China through the end of March in response to the outbreak that has already caused more than 200 deaths in China.
Additionally, any citizens who were in mainland China 14 days prior to returning to the USA will be placed in a "self-imposed" quarantine for 14 days.
An average of more than 14,000 people traveled by air to the United States from China each day previous year, either by direct or indirect flights, according to the White House.
Governments around the world are evacuating their citizens from the central Chinese province of Hubei, where the outbreak began, and putting them in quarantine.
"As of 31 January, some staff and dependants from the British Embassy and Consulates are being withdrawn from China".
"In the event that the situation deteriorates further, the ability of the British Embassy and Consulates to provide assistance to British nationals from within China may be limited", the United Kingdom government said in a statement.

Countries across Africa are ramping up measures to prevent an outbreak of a new coronavirus that has killed more than 250 in China and spread to several Asian countries, and as far afield as the United States, Europe and Australia.
