As Hamlin took the checkered flag, 42-year-old Newman had to be rescued from his auto following a terrifying crash during the final lap.
Denny Hamlin has won the NASCAR Cup Series 62nd Annual Daytona 500, in which another racer Ryan Newman suffered a fiery accident, according to the official leaderboard results. No other information was provided. Earnhardt was the last Cup driver killed in a race and NASCAR has made massive safety improvements in the almost 20 years since.
Another fan expressed relief following a statement by NASCAR on Newman's non-life threatening conditions.
"We have a group of expert consultants ... with a great level of experience, education and background in protecting humans during crashes", John Patalak, Director of Safety Engineering for NASCAR said in 2017.
The Daytona 500 was pushed to Monday after rain forced the postponement of the race on Sunday.
"Ryan Newman is being treated at Halifax Medical Center".
"We're just hoping for the best". Gibbs has four Daytona 500 victories as an owner. It wasn't until Fox Sports told him they would not interview him on the front stretch after his burnouts that Hamlin learned Newman's incident was bad. If I can have fun in this garage doing it and get paid what I feel like I deserve to get paid, then I'm all for it. Hamlin became the first driver since Sterling Marlin in 1995 to win the Daytona 500 in consecutive seasons and became the seventh driver to win three or more Daytona 500s.
Footage from the final lap shows Blaney attempt to overtake Newman for the lead of the race coming into the final turn.
"I was just committing to pushing him to the win once he blocked a couple times, was kind of beat". The two Ford drivers went to the bottom of the track, and Blaney gave Newman a huge push as they both passed Hamlin on the backstretch of the 2.5-mile track.
