Newman's auto flips several times as it hurtles through the air, eventually catching fire, spinning onto the infield and crossing the finish line on its roof.
As Associated Press reports, NASCAR shared news of Newman's condition almost two hours after he was removed for his vehicle, reporting the 42-year-old driver was in serious condition at the nearby Halifax Medical Center.
NASCAR executive vice president Steve O'Donnell later told reporters that Newman was in serious condition at a local area hospital, but his injuries were deemed non-life-threatening.
Denny Hamlin won the race. Matt Kenseth won the 2012 Daytona 500, which was run on Monday night after a weather delay and technically ended Tuesday when the checkered flag waved after midnight.

Hamlin joins six pilots of the Hall of Fame as winners of three or more Daytona 500.

The Daytona 500, considered the biggest race of the year, has served as the NASCAR season opener since 1982.
