Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the rate of COVID-19 infections is accelerating, and the outbreak's apex is now expected to hit even sooner. World Health Organization spokesperson Margaret Harris has told the reporters that over the past 24 hours, 85 per cent of the new cases worldwide were from Europe and the USA and out of those, at least 40 per cent were just from the US. If every hospital in New York State increased beds by 100%, he said, that would have brought statewide hospital bed capacity to around 100,000, which is right around the previous projection of 110,000 forecast for the apex of the crisis.
Cuomo also issued an order for the state's hospitals to increase their capacities by at least 50 percent. In response, both the governor and the White House have been in talks to fast-track the manufacturing of ventilators among private companies or to purchase them outside the U.S. The New York governor offered brief praise of Kushner as a fellow New Yorker who has been crucial to helping the state accelerate the production of ventilators for coronavirus patients in intensive care units.
The state also desperately needs ventilators, to help people breathe after their lungs have been compromised by COVID-19. Trump said the restrictions could themselves lead to suicides or other fatalities but cited no evidence to support the assertion.
Mr Cuomo also announced two experimental medical interventions in a bid to battle back against the illness before more sophisticated therapies are developed.
"We need more federal help than this bill gives us".
That is about 10 times as much as California and Washington states, Cuomo said, imploring federal authorities to prioritize resources, including vital medical equipment like ventilators, for his state. Another option, he said, would be for the government to use its stockpile of roughly 20,000 ventilators.
Treatment with one of the new therapies, a combination of an anti-malaria drug and an antibiotic, will begin Tuesday, Cuomo said during a press briefing in Albany.
Cuomo said the USA does not need to purchase enough ventilators for the entire country all at once. It's not just NY. You want a pat on the back for sending 400 ventilators?. The ICU beds, that really means a ventilated bed.
"It is spiking", Cuomo said, speaking with boxes of gloves, masks and surgical gowns stacked up behind him. New York City had 14,904 of those cases.
"I watched, over the last few days, Gov. [Andrew] Cuomo, I watched Gavin Newsom", Trump said Sunday".
"Different regions have different curves at different times, but NY is first, and once we get through this we can use our experience and supplies to help other states to get through this pandemic".
Trump, other members of his administration and some other Republicans across the country, have begun saying that the costs to the U.S. economy of maintaining the lockdowns and social distancing is becoming too high for the benefit.
The governor said his state will not be the only one with a dire need for ventilators and other key resources.
I have to be honest about the fact that we do not expect this to go quickly, and I wish we did, but we don't, de Blasio said, according to CBS Local New York.
