The governor of the US state of CT confirmed Wednesday a six-week-old newborn died from the novel coronavirus, marking the second infant death in the country.
Lamont said the newborn was unresponsive and was brought to a Hartford-area hospital.
Lamont said CT has the fourth largest number of COVID-19 infections per capita in the US, behind New York, New Jersey, and Louisiana.
"That baby was less then 7 weeks old, and it is just a reminder that nobody is safe from this virus", Lamont said.
The governor said the loss proves the importance of staying home and limiting exposure to others.
"Your life and the lives of others could literally depend on it. Our prayers are with the family at this hard time", Lamont said.
"This is absolutely heart-breaking", the governor wrote.
The media reported that the baby girl was unconscious before arriving at a hospital and subsequently died.
The American newborn died last week in Connecticut, Governor Ned Lamont confirmed.
The Covid-19 virus spread is becoming so deadly that it has taken it's youngest life so far.
What's more distressing about the pediatric death is it's the only one of its kind in the world confirmed to have been caused by the coronavirus since the pandemic began in Hubei province in China in December 2019.
A six-week-old baby has died after testing positive for coronavirus. The vast majority of the 85 deaths in the state have been individuals over the age of 70.
