Cuomo announced that the Chinese government facilitated a donation of 1,000 ventilators that will arrive at JFK airport on Saturday. He said those fans were due to arrive on Saturday and that the state of OR had volunteered to send 140 more breathing machines. We won't know until you see the next few days, does it go up, does it go down.
It is unbelievable to me that in New York State, in the United States of America, we can't make these materials and that we are all shopping China to try to get these materials and we're all competing against each other, he said.
Two of the principal USA coronavirus hot spots - NY and Louisiana - reported their biggest jumps in COVID-19 deaths yet on Friday, as the White House sent mixed messages on whether Americans should cover their face if they venture outdoors.
NY is bracing for the apex of hospitalizations in the next week or so, and Cuomo said on Sunday it was too soon to tell if it was nearing a plateau in the crisis. More than 400 people have died in Louisiana, and state authorities have been sprinting to find ventilators.
Cuomo said he expects the peak of coronavirus cases in the state in the "seven-day" range, though he said the state isn't yet prepared for the pressure on the healthcare system. A total of 122,031 people in New York State have tested positive for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) virus, up by around 9,000 cases in the same time-frame.
By far the most cases are in New York City with 63,306 (6,147 new cases) as of late Saturday afternoon, April 4.
Still, as Spain completes its third week in a state of emergency, there were signs the number of new infections were slowing, but they were still high with 7,026 new cases reported overnight Saturday and 809 deaths. ICU admissions and intubations were also down, the governor said, while the discharge rate from hospitals was rising.
"So we're not yet at the apex", he continued. There were four new deaths for an official total of 3,326.
At least 1.2 million people have been diagnosed with COVID-19 since the virus' initial discovery last December, according to Johns Hopkins University's global tracker.
The figures showed that a wave of lethal coronavirus infections expected to overwhelm hospitals, even in relatively affluent, urban areas like NY, has begun to crash down on the United States.
Another 140 ventilators were also provided by Oregon Governor Kate Brown. The facility can take in 2,500 patients.
"I understand supply chain issues, I understand the cost of manufacturing, but there " s a public health reason, as we've all learned the hard way, why we need the capacity in this country to do this", Cuomo said.
"I think we all feel the same, these stresses, this country, this state - like nothing I've experienced in my lifetime".
