Researchers in China reported that cough, pneumonia and fever seemed to improve sooner among 31 patients given hydroxychloroquine compared to 31 others who did not get the drug, but fewer people in the comparison group had cough or fevers to start with.
The president has repeatedly touted the drug as a possible cure for Covid-19, despite a lack of proof.
It just so happens that one of the largest manufacturers of the drug, Novartis, previously paid Trump's now-incarcerated former personal attorney Michael Cohen more than $1 million for healthcare policy insight following Trump's election in 2016.
It is unclear how much will now be exported.
"With regard to paracetamol and hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), they will be kept in a licensed category and their demand position would be continuously monitored".
On Sunday, Trump said he made a request to release Hydroxycholoroquine for the United States in a telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Modi.
During his Sunday briefing, Trump even prevented Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the infectious disease expert on his coronavirus task force, from answering CNN reporter Jeremy Diamond's question about whether he agreed with the president's belief in the drug. At his daily news conference at the White House, Trump said, "I called Prime Minister Modi of India this morning".
"But of course, there may be retaliation, why wouldn't there be?", he added. "Why wouldn't there be?"
The Indian foreign ministry swiftly backtracked and on Tuesday said it would now license the export of the drug and paracetamol - exports of which were restricted in March - "in appropriate quantities to all our neighbouring countries who are dependent on our capabilities".
The US has recorded nearly 370,000 virus cases and almost 11,000 deaths.
The administration's promotion of the drug comes after a heated Situation Room meeting of the White House's coronavirus task force on Saturday, in which Navarro challenged the top USA infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci over his concerns about recommending the drug based only on unscientific anecdotal evidence. Typically used to treat auto-immune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, researchers believe it could also work as anti-viral medication.
White House trade adviser Peter Navarro today acknowledged that members of the task force dealing with the coronavirus outbreak clashed over the weekend about the efficacy of a malaria drug, hydroxychloroquine, for use against the disease.
India has been a significant partner of the U.S. in the pharmaceutical sector and expects similar cooperation to continue between the two economies, a senior official has said as America has urged New Delhi to allow the sale of Hydroxychloroquine tablets to treat its rising COVID-19 patients.
After the surgeon general likened the coming weeks to Pearl Harbor and the September 11 terror attacks, and as the nation's top doctors cautioned against even going to grocery store or pharmacy unless absolutely necessary, President Donald Trump on Sunday clung to an optimistic tone, telling Americans there will be "light at the end of the tunnel" and reviving his phrase that "the cure can't be worse than the problem itself".
In India, hydroxychloroquine could be bought over the counter and is fairly affordable, but its purchase and use has been severely restricted ever since it was named as a possible treatment for Covid-19.
"Chloroquine seems to block the coronavirus in lab studies".
"India has always been a significant partner of the United States and the pharmaceutical sector".
Despite the fact trials are yet to conclude, people have begun to self-medicate - with sometimes disastrous consequences.
An article in the Lancet medical journal also warns hydroxychloroquine can have unsafe side-effects if the dose is not carefully controlled.
