When those offices do reopen, most employees will continue to work from home.
The CEO of Ottawa-based e-commerce company Shopify, which became Canada's most valuable company earlier this month, said in a tweet it's now "digital by default".
Shopify offices will remain closed until 2021, and then reopen with a significant shift in goal as the company looks to make the remote work experience the same as for those in the office.
Other major tech companies have also announced that staff will be able to work remotely indefinitely. "Or do we jump in the driver's seat and try to figure out how to build a global world-class company by not getting together that often".
Shopify, which surpassed more than 1,000 employees in its hometown of Ottawa past year and briefly overtook RBC as Canada's most valuable company on the Toronto Stock Exchange a few weeks ago, was an early adopter of remote working amid the coronavirus pandemic.
"I think it's important to adjust to new realities as quick as we can", said Lutke. The office-retail-residential complex being developed by Allied Properties Real Estate Investment Trust and RioCan Real Estate Investment, will be one of the city's largest, and Shopify was due to lease 254,000 square feet.
Shopify announced past year it would open an office at the Well, part of a plan to double its workforce in Toronto to 1,500 by 2022.
Employees at Shopify will continue to work from home even after the novel coronavirus pandemic ends, the booming Canadian tech giant announced Thursday. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has said that employees can work remotely going forward, while Facebook is giving new hires the choice to work remotely and plans to extend that option to current employees.
